Love Letters to My Beautiful Bride
Wednesday, September 1st, 2010Love Letters to My Beautiful Bride
Wednesday, April 21st, 2010Dear Mrs. Shepard,
For some reason, being away from you this week seems harder than most. Perhaps it’s the heartbreak of the new house deal falling through at the last minute. At least I’ll be home for the Country Music Marathon Saturday. As I drove around Chicago today, I heard this Faith Hill song that summed up my thoughts and feelings so well:
Damn these old wheels,
Rolling too slow.
I stare down this white line,
With so far to go.
Headlights keep coming,
Loneliness humming along.
Who poured this rain?
Who made these clouds?
I stare through this windshield,
Thinking out loud.
Time keeps on crawling,
Love keeps on calling me home.
I’d jump all these mountains and take to the skies,
Sail through the heavens with stars in my eyes.
If my heart had wings,
I would fly to you and lie
Beside you as you dream,
If my heart had wings.
We both committed,
We both agreed.
You do what you have to, to get what you need.
Feeling you near me with so many miles in between
Lord, it ain’t easy out here in the dark,
To keep us together so far apart.
If my heart had wings,
I would fly to you and lie
Beside you as you dream,
If my heart had wings.
Stuck on this circle,
Spinning around,
Cut loose from this road
That’s tying me down.
If my heart had wings,
I would fly to you and lie
Beside you as you dream,
If my heart had wings.
Love Letter to My Beautiful Bride
Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009Dear Mrs. Shepard,
Happy 23 month anniversary.
Although I know everyone said so, I want you to know how much I appreciate how hard you worked to make Eric and Dara’s party a success. Cooking for Thanksgiving on your birthday is more than anyone should have to do, and adding a wedding shower to the mix doubled everything. To have still found time to get DVD’s to keep everyone entertained after Thanksgiving dinner just reminds me of how much you think about others. But I want you to know that after I get back from my last speaking engagement of the year in Shreveport tomorrow, and you get back from the Memphis Marathon, I look forward to spoiling you rotten in Nashville for the rest of this month, and celebrating our 2 year anniversary together in Las Vegas on January 1.
Your Husband Who Adores and Can’t Wait to Get Home to You
Love Letter to My Beautiful Bride
Monday, November 23rd, 2009
Dear Mrs. Shepard,
One would think that a best selling author who can write in way that connects with strangers in six languages would have no trouble writing a love letter to his wife.
But every time I try, the thoughts just seem to get all jumbled in my head and what flows from my fingertips into the keyboard never seems to be worthy.
I feel as inept as Steve Carell’s character in the movie “Dan in Real Life”.
When I Googled “how to write a good love letter to my wife”, I found a website that said…
“Men often have trouble vocally expressing their feelings. We’d rather show our love through actions. But it’s not quite that way for a woman. Women definitely appreciate our acts of love, but their brains are also quite a bit more language oriented than ours. They want to hear the words behind the actions. They want to know exactly what’s in our hearts.”
So as imperfect as this is, I want you to know how I feel about your birthday tomorrow.
I love birthdays so much that it’s hard for me to grasp that you don’t want to make a big deal out of yours, but I know it’s a woman thing.
I love birthday cake so much that it’s hard for me to grasp that you don’t want a cake, but I know it’s a calorie thing.
I know you don’t like it when I put you on a pedestal, but I know it’s a modesty thing.
But I just want you to know that I am so excited about your birthday tomorrow, and I know why – it’s a love thing.
Last night when John Fogerty sang “Proud Mary” for his encore, I kept thinking about how proud I am to be your husband.
You are the best thing that’s ever happened to me, and I sometimes have a hard time grasping how I got so lucky.
Thank you for saying yes.
Happy Birthday,
Your Husband Who Adores You
A Love Letter to My Beautiful Bride
Monday, October 26th, 2009To My Beautiful Bride,
Just in case I haven’t articulated this well enough, I want you to know that when I say my prayers at night, the first thing I do is thank God for all that He’s given me, starting with you. Then I ask Him to bless and watch over you.
When I look into your eyes, I can’t believe you married me, and what a lucky man I am.
Sometime this weekend, you were standing in front of the dining room table, and our eyes locked for a minute, and I felt like I was staring and glaring, and wondered if you noticed. I was having that thought.
When you made the comment to the realtor Saturday about wanting to make sure our new house isn’t so big that you need an intercom system to find your husband, I realized how much I would hate that too.
No matter how big my library/study becomes, I always want to feel near you.
Today as I was driving through Chicago, I heard this Journey song on the radio, and it summed up what I feel today:
“Highway run, into the midnight sun
Wheels go round and round
You’re on my mind.
Restless hearts sleep alone tonight,
Sending all my love along the wire.
Through space and time
Always another show,
Wondering where I am lost without you.
And being a part ain’t easy on this love affair ,
Two strangers learn to fall in love again
I get the joy of rediscovering you .
Oh girl
you stand by me
I’m forever yours
Faithfully.”
I can’t wait to see you on Friday.
Your Lovesick Husband in Milwaukee, WI
P.S. And I loved your meatloaf last night.
