My New Addiction

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Never shall it be said that I’m not man enough to admit when I’m wrong. As much as I hate video games, I have now changed my tune – at least a little. The Wii Fit Plus I bought my beautiful bride for Christmas has become quite addictive. While I still find the yoga boooooooooriiiiiing, the golf and baseball are pretty darn cool, at least on ugly winter days when it’s too cold to do anything outside. By far, the most addictive is the game where you flap your arms and fly, which happens to be a recurring dream I’ve had for over 40 years (and is why I began flying helicopters 10 years ago).

For Allergy Sufferers Only

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

Hats off to the COIT. Yesterday we had them clean the ducts, hoping it would help me breathe better. Not only did it work, but they also discovered a “little” detail in the upstairs HVAC unit that no one else ever caught. The end cap on one of the ducts in the attic was never installed, leaving the unit to suck sir from the attic straight into the system, with lots of dust and fiberglass in it. So if you suffer from allergies, here’s a tip: In addition to having your ducts cleaned, have someone inspect all the ductwork in your house for leaks.

If You Suffer from S.A.D., You Gotta Get One of These

I’m not sure if it’s really a medical condition (Seasonal Affective Disorder), or just a fancy term for getting bummed out when the skies are grey and there’s no sun. But if you work at a desk, I’ve found the greatest little gadget for making your office feel a little more like it has natural sunlight. It’s called the Ott Lite, and is available at Office Depot.

“Glenn, Do You Regularly Trip While Walking?”

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

I bought my beautiful bride a Wii with a Wii Fit Plus balance board for Christmas, so she can do Yoga and other training indoors when the weather is bad. I reluctantly took the balance and coordination test, and discovered that Wii has an attitude. Its response was “Glenn, do you regularly trip while walking?” Guess that means I failed the test. :(

Run Across Alabama

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Glenn,

As a runner I thought you might find the Run Across Alabama interesting.
Eric Schotz, Elliott’s father and co-organizer of the event, is a co-worker
here at 3M.

Needless to say, we are so proud of Eric and his determination.
As the week moves forward, please keep Eric and the team in your thoughts and prayers.

Race Day

Vince Gill with Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Shepard

Myself, Vince, and My Beautiful Bride

A very hot and humid day for the 8th annual Run for Family & Fatherhood road race here in Nashville, but it was worth it. Until you’ve run a road race in the searing heat, then sat in the grass by the river with a small group of people eating all the sausage and biscuits you can handle (courtesy of race sponsor Chick-fil-A), while listening to Vince Gill (honorary chairman) sing “Go Rest High on That Mountain” with nothing but his acoustic guitar, you haven’t lived!

Ticks!

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

I always laughed at Brad Paisley’s song “I’d Like to Check You for Ticks”, but this is not so funny. This morning while showering, I found a tick on my arm. Now I’m getting paranoid and imagining that I feel little critters crawling all over me.

Presidents Age Twice as Fast as the Rest of Us

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

As I wrote in How to be the Employee Your Company Can’t Live Without, it is amazing how fast Bill Clinton and George W. Bush aged while in office. Tonight on NBC Nightly News, a doctor who studies this said that science believes all presidents age at about twice the rate of the rest of us. They also pointed out how much grey hair the youthful Barack Obama has gotten since he entered the presidential race last year. Though being president is a job you couldn’t pay me enough to do, this is yet another reason I’m glad I don’t have that job.
