A Great Day at Casa De Shepard

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

What a great day this is at Casa De Shepard. It began when the veterinarian called this morning and informed my beautiful bride that the cist they removed from our doggy’s ear was not malignant. Today is also the closing day of the February launch of my newest program, the desktop video training version of “How to Be the Employee Your Company Can’t Live Without”, which I discovered passed my pie-in-the-sky dream goal at exactly 11 minutes past midnight last night (the beauty of selling products on the Internet), and tonight is hockey night.

Though I looooooooove my Tennessee Titans, who had the best regular season record in professional football last year, I’d rather watch the Titans on TV and attend hockey games in person (though I can’t watch hockey on TV). I never knew anything about hockey until Nashville got its own NHL team 11 years ago. In the first game I attended, they got a hat trick (look it up if you don’t know what a big, hairy deal that is), and was instantly hooked.

Even though my Nashville Predators are 11th in their conference and will probably get whooped badly, I’m stoked about going downtown tonight to see the Detroit Redwings take on my Preds. And if things get too ugly, there’s always Tootsies Orchid Lounge and honky tonk row right across the street from the hockey rink. :)

Comcast

Friday, February 27th, 2009

After last Tuesday’s story on the miserable state of customer service, I have to say something about how one employee that made all the difference in an industry not typically associated with great customer service. Yesterday the cable service in the industrial park where my company is located went down, causing us to lose Internet service. One technician named Chris, whose last name I regret not getting, was in and out of our office, and many more, all day long, as Internet service went out, then came up, then went out again minutes later. He kept us informed the whole time, and kept thanking us for our patience (I’m sure a lot of businesses were not so patient). Hats off to Chris for being the employee that Comcast can’t live without.

Google Adwords

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

This is closed circuit for members of my speaking and information marketers coaching group. For those of you who ever wondered if The Glennster practices what he preaches, heeeeeeeeere ya’ go. We just increased our Google Adwords spending by 1,700%. Why? Because so many lightweights are no longer advertising, which means it’s much easier and much cheaper to get good positioning right now. Just like stocks and real estate, advertising is “on sale” right now.

Only weak people smell fear when the economy takes a downturn. Smart people smell opportunity!

Should a Man Who Makes $20,000 a Year and Gets Approved for $1,500,000 Loan Be Allowed to Sue His Mortgage Company?

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Paul Harvey News reports that a man in Washington state who makes $20,000 a year was approved for a $1,500,000 condo. He made a 5% down payment of $75,000, which he also borrowed. After he was foreclosed on because he couldn’t make the $7,000 a month payment, he sued the mortgage company. While what the mortgage lender did was wrong, what drug dealers do is wrong too. Yet we don’t “bail out” drug addicts and blame only the dealers, so why are we rewarding these individuals who apparently have no concept of personable responsibility? What’s even more disgusting is that they’ll probably find 12 entitlement-minded folks just like him to serve on the jury, and he’ll get rewarded even more.

More Childhood Photos of My Beautiful Bride

My sister-in-law in Muncie, Indiana, sends this newly discovered photo of Mrs. Shepard from around 1965. She’s the one on the lower right hand corner. Adorable, isn’t she? (Click on the photo)

“I Forgot to Close the Doors on My Floating Car and It Sank”

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Dave Ramsey has an entire show coming up on the different “Stupid Tax” people have paid. The leading story so far is from a guy who bought one of those old boat cars, and then didn’t close the door tight enough when he tried to drive it on the water. The result is that he left the shore in his car, but returned carless and swimming back. No word on how much he paid for it.

Would You Spend a Year in Prison for $80,000?

Friday, February 20th, 2009

I saw on the Dallas news this morning that current “exonoree compensation” for people who were wrongfully convicted and sent to prison is $50,000 a year, but they want to raise it to $80,000 a year. They interviewed a man who spent 20 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, and was finally cleared through DNA. I guess that means he now gets $1,000,000, though nothing can give him his life back. I can’t help but wondering how you calculate what a year of somebody’s life is worth. Glad I don’t have to make decisions like that.

Retail Sales Up 1% in January

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Oh no! Don’t tell Katie Couric – or the Doom and Gloom politicians in Washington – but USA Today reports “US retail sales jumped 1% in January, reversing a six month declining trend and defying economists’ expectations by posting the biggest increase in 14 months”. My questions is, “Why wasn’t this front page news???”
