Taylor Swift

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

And speaking of what happens when you combine talent, dedication, and an incredible work ethic, Dateline NBC did an entire show tonight on the hottest thing in country music today, 19-year-old Taylor Swift. Turns out this young lady not only has talent, charm, and class, but she’s also an outstanding manager and employer.

Jay Leno

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Last night I watched Jay’s final episode of The Tonight Show. Hard to believe he’s been hosting for 17 years. But what’s most impressive – and helps explain why he got a new show in prime time – is that he never had a single sick day up until he was hospitalized near the very end of his tenure as host.

Why Are Women So Mean to Each Other?

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Today’s teleseminar on assertiveness skills for women went even better than expected. I completely revamped the material from last year, because I’m so passionate about this topic. It also coincides with the launch of the new website (www.assertivenessskillsforwomen.com).

I’ve been teaching this program for about 10 years now, and am constantly asked why a man is teaching a program for women. It’s because I’m so passionate about this topic.

I believe that women have so many advantages over us men, especially in management. Women are good at multi-tasking (we men are very single task oriented), they’re more patient, more clever and resourceful, and so on.

Women have made historic strides in the years I’ve been speaking on this topic. For example, Meg Whitman, who was the CEO of Ebay for 10 years, is largely credited with making Ebay what it is today. The new CEO of Yahoo is also a woman (Carol Bartz). Three of the last four U.S. Secretaries of State have been women (Madeline Albright, Condoleezza Rica, and Hillary Clinton).

Yet despite all this historic progress, women still have to be twice as good at what they do to be considered half as good as a man. Perhaps the saddest truth is that the biggest obstacle women face in succeeding today is not MEN who resent women that succeed, it’s other WOMEN. You ladies can be so mean to each other!
So for all you men who are wondering why I’m so passionate about this topic, now you know.

Memorial Day 2009

Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery

Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery

I heard a radio talk show host asking people on the street exactly what Memorial Day means. Is it to honor those who served in our military, or those who died in the line of duty? Most didn’t know, and to be 100% candid, I wasn’t sure myself. So I looked it up to make sure. Click on the photo for the real story.

Mike Huckabee, Andy Andrews, and the U.S.M.C.

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

What a great day! Cornerstone Church went all out this morning in its tribute to the men and women who’ve served in the armed services. Members of each branch of the military were honored one at a time, but the highlight was when four Marines repelled on ropes from the ceiling to the floor.

The guest speaker was Mike Huckabee, who was outstanding. While most people know Mike as a politician (governor of Arkansas for 10 years, and presidential candidate), today was not about politics. He was here in the capacity of his previous job – a Baptist minister. (His new job is the envy of every person in media. He got Paul Harvey’s time slot on ABC Radio networks).

I also ran into New York Times best selling author Andy Andrews, who I first met when he was the keynote speaker four years ago at the 2005 NSA (National Speaker’s Association) convention in Atlanta. Andy still has that million dollar smile, and hasn’t changed a bit.

Some People Deserve to be Unemployed

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

It’s natural to feel sympathy for people who lost their jobs and are unemployed. But there’s this underlying assumption that all of them are unable to get a new job because of the economy, and that’s just not so. In the last two weeks alone, I’ve offered to help two unemployed people find new a new job. One hasn’t responded to my e-mails, and the other didn’t call me as he promised to, even though I gave him my personal cell phone number (which I do not give out to many folks).

I even bought a copy of Jay Conrad Levinson’s book “Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters: 400 Unconventional Tips, Tricks, and Tactics for Landing Your Dream Job” to brush up on job hunting skills, in order to help them.

But you can’t help someone who won’t help themselves. I was working harder to help these two individuals solve their problem than they were. If they’re not willing to work any harder than that to find a job, they won’t work hard once they get one. So I’ve come to the conclusion that some people deserve to be unemployed.
