The Subject of all of my Teenage Dreams
The Subject of all of my Teenage Dreams

I’m angry but not surprised that the media coverage of Michael Jackson’s death has all but drowned out that of Farrah Fawcett. My first memory of her was the 1976 poster that every teenage boy (including a 14 year old Glenn Shepard) had on his wall. My latest memory of her was as a ditz embarrassing herself in a 1997 appearance on the David Letterman show.

But after seeing the chilling biographical film she made of her battle with cancer, I have more respect and admiration for her than I’ve ever had for just about anyone. This was one brave, talented, and incredibly endearing woman who has left a legacy like that of Professor Randy Pausch (The Last Lecture).

My How Church has Changed

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

If you asked me where the best place in Nashville is to hear live rock and roll while watching a laser and fireworks show, my answer would not have been a church. But today Cornerstone Church held its annual Fourth of July celebration one Sunday early because of a scheduling issue, and I was blown away.

After Pastor Maury Davis opened with a sermon on the death of common sense in America, personal responsibility, and the growing victim mentality (sound like someone you know?), the celebration began with Jovan Haye shooting t-shirts out of an air cannon. (Jovan is the new defensive tackle the Tennessee Titans just signed from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He’s replacing Pro-Bowler Albert Haynesworth, who went to the Washington Redskins). Pastor Davis cautioned Jovan to be careful and not hurt anyone in the congregation, except for Pittsburgh Steelers fans.

Then a team of very talented musicians and actors portrayed 233 years of American history through music, including heart pounding renditions of Sweet Home Alabama, Born to Be Wild, and Smoke on the Water.

As much as I miss the simplicity of yesteryear when there was no e-mail, Internet, or cell phones, this is one instance where I definitely do not miss the good old days. If only they had professional football players and electric guitars and played Lynrd Skynrd in church when I was a kid, maybe I wouldn’t have been such a little heathen back then ;)

Race Day

Vince Gill with Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Shepard

Myself, Vince, and My Beautiful Bride

A very hot and humid day for the 8th annual Run for Family & Fatherhood road race here in Nashville, but it was worth it. Until you’ve run a road race in the searing heat, then sat in the grass by the river with a small group of people eating all the sausage and biscuits you can handle (courtesy of race sponsor Chick-fil-A), while listening to Vince Gill (honorary chairman) sing “Go Rest High on That Mountain” with nothing but his acoustic guitar, you haven’t lived!

I’m a Celebrity… Get Me out of Here!

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

I’ve never watched the show, but caught a glimpse of a familiar face on it while changing channels last night – John Sally, just as he was being voted off the show. The world knows John as a powerhouse basketball player who played for the Chicago Bulls with Michael Jordan, and later for the L.A. Lakers with Shaquille O’Neal, among others.

But I remember John from college, when we sat beside each other in one of our management classes, because seats were assigned alphabetically and Shepard followed Sally.

I used to kid him about the gold chain he wore with the word “Spider” in giant gold letters, and he kidded me about the earring I wore in my left ear, the leopard skin bandanna, and the narrow leather tie (it was 1984).

We all knew John would become an instant millionaire once he entered the NBA, and wanted the life he had. While he went on to the Detroit Pistons after college, I became a management trainee for Cintas, the uniform company.

A quarter of a century later, I’m just starting to approach the prime years of my career, and his are past, at least for his basketball career. Though he’s been in several movies from Bad Boys with Will Smith to the recent Confessions of a Shopaholic, I doubt anything will ever compare to the glory days of 30,000 fans screaming his name.

I hated seeing him with the C-list celebs on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me out of Here!, because he’s a good guy who’s better than that. I can’t imagine why he did that program.

Guess Garth Brooks said it best when he sang “I thank God for unanswered prayers”.

The Kentucky Derby

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Looks like the plans for a Derby party next year have expanded into actually going to the Derby in Louisville. Being a Derby newbie, I know nothing about it. So if anyone reading this has ever attended, I would greatly appreciate it if you would shoot us an email at www.glennshepard.com or post a reply on this blog.

Father’s Day Weekend

Sunday, June 21st, 2009
What’s better than going to see a father-in-law you’re quite fond of for Father’s Day weekend? Throwing in lots of horsepower! We spent the weekend in Muncie, Indiana, where we helped him plan his 2010 Kentucky Derby party (he’s 82 going on 42). And the rainy weather let up long enough for my brother-in-law to break out his 1994 Dodge Viper. He bought it from Jim Davis, creator of the worlds most famous cartoon cat, Garfield. It’s 15 years old and has 7,500 miles on it. It has no air conditioner and no outside door handles – just 10 cylinders and LOTS of horsepower.
