The first Chevrolet Volt rolls off the assembly line in Michigan today. While I hope electric cars take off and reduce our dependency on foreign oil, I don’t think most Americans are ready to give up their horsepower and freedom for a car that only goes 100 miles per charge. I hope GM is right and I’m wrong, because the last thing GM needs is to lose more money. Only time – and the free market – will tell.

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010How I Write a Speech
Monday, March 29th, 2010People who want to be professional speakers often ask me how to prepare for a speech. The secret is to keep a database of all the stories and vignettes that you’ve used over the years, then choose the ones that best fit the audience you’ll be speaking to, and build the speech from there. Here are 11 of those stories that I’ll be using at an upcoming presentation to a private group in Shreveport, Louisiana:
- The Kansas City. MO Hooters waitress
- This is Avis, not Hertz
- I’ll never nod at another man again
- I told my puppy to come to me, and he went wee wee all over the floor
- Everyone who drives faster than you is a maniac; everyone who drives slower is an idiot
- People don’t come to a restaurant for the food, they come for the experience
- Love is not the opposite of hate
- The little girl at Toys Are Us in Columbus, GA
- Jeffrey’s Gremlin
- The thong lady in Kenosha, WI
- I walked to Los Angeles

“I Get a Two Hour Lunch Break Since I Was Out Yesterday”
Saturday, March 27th, 2010Here’s a perfect example of how Americans’ idea of what it means to hold down a job and have a work ethic has changed. A manager from Quincy, Illinois, who attended yesterday’s seminar, told me one of her young employees called out sick on Monday. The when she returned, she expected to get double the time off for lunch on Tuesday, since she wasn’t there on Monday to take her lunch break.
Maybe This Helps Explain Why Greece Is Crumbling
Friday, March 26th, 2010The country of Greece is on the verge of economic collapse, and it’s not hard to understand why. They label certain occupations as “high risk”, allowing workers in those occupations to retire and draw full benefits at age 50. Among those “high risk” occupations is hairdressers because of the chemicals, and TV and radio broadcasters, because of the bacteria on microphones.
