Sticky situation, the Gulf has become.
More government is NEVER the answer. I believe BP is doing what it can and isn’t necessarily the bad guy here.
And yet, BP’s peers will go on worldwide television today to say, “BP? I mean, we talk to them in the halls, but we never, like, hung out or whatever. I mean, we sat next to each other in science class, but we weren’t, like, lab partners or anything. They just aren’t cool.”
And BP’s peers in the oil industry will throw BP under the bus.
Very few citizens of this great country seem to understand that they, themselves control what goes on in their own lives by the choices they make.
Elected officials are a direct representation of the people who voted them there.
There is a word that is seldom used these days and it is “accountability”. It is so much easier to point fingers, re-direct blame and make excuses. It’s actualy become an art form! So few people “own” their mistakes now and that’s very sad to me. It’s by mistakes that we learn not to make them. It’s by mistakes that we discover humility. It’s by mistakes that we get stronger. It’s by mistakes that we stay human beings.
BP has obviously made some bad choices and terrible mistakes that will cost many people dearly. The repercussions of this disaster (and disaster is a mild phrase to describe what is happening) will last at least a generation and maybe more. But, what of the accountability of others in this. Why weren’t the safety devices on this rig examined and certified by inspectors from the government? Isn’t there a department somewhere that should be held accountable for letting these things “slide”? Are there no safety inspections being done on rigs?
Why aren’t the outraged people of the coast taking clean-up matters into their own hands? I’ve seen many examples of clean-up methods that work wonderfully but none are being used. Trust me, the Feds wouldn’t dare arrest all these people. Imagine the outrage from the citizens of this country if they tried? But, still they stand back and weep for themselves and do nothing but wait for someone else to do it for them.
No one wants to be accountable – especially when they can make an excuse or blame someone else. Until we learn to accept our own failings, we will continue to fail and fail again because we clearly are not learning from our mistakes!
As to the Opryland Hotel….building next to a river translates to a risk even to someone who’s never seen a flood! It’s common sense. I don’t think the folks along the gulf or east coast need someone to tell them there’s a risk of hurricanes! Sure, I sympathize, but only to the extent that they obviously thought they were invinceable and now that they know they are not, they are blaming someone else so they “feeeeel” better. But, they’ll build again in the same place, won’t they?
